2026 Update: The DJI Neo 2 Is Now the Newer Option

Since this review first ran, DJI launched a direct successor: the DJI Neo 2, announced in November 2025. It keeps the same palm-launch, self-flying DNA but addresses the original Neo's biggest weaknesses. The headline upgrades are omnidirectional obstacle sensing (with forward-facing LiDAR) — something the original Neo lacks entirely — plus a 2-axis gimbal for smoother footage, 4K video up to 60fps with 4K/100fps slow motion, faster subject tracking (up to 12 m/s versus 8 m/s), gesture control, and a jump to 49GB of internal storage. It's slightly heavier at 151 grams. Despite DJI initially saying it wouldn't sell the Neo 2 in the US, it reached American buyers in late 2025 and currently runs about $259 for the drone-only version.

Does that make the original Neo obsolete? Not quite. With the Neo 2 on the shelf, retailers have cut the original Neo to roughly $149–$169, making it an even better entry point if your priority is the lowest possible price and you don't need obstacle avoidance or a gimbal. If you want the safer, smoother, more capable drone and can stretch the budget, the Neo 2 is the one to get. Either way, both remain legal to buy and fly in the US — the FCC Covered List (December 2025) only blocks authorization of future DJI models, not existing ones.
